If you are able to hire a private guide, this wold be the best way, funnily enough it is not too expensive to tour Egypt this way, especially if a small group of you join together.

Hotels will be able to recommend a guide and you may take your chances by emloying one of the hopefulls who hang around the monumets and tourist areas.

Of course all the big tour operators arrange their own guides as part of their packages, personally I just think that with your own private enterprise, touring around Egypt becomes a bit more personalised and you can spend more time in the places that you find you enjoy most.
